Features of Some Core Subjects
English Language/Studies
During their years at BIGGA Nursery & Primary School the pupils will be encouraged to develop their language abilities in the four key areas of speaking, listening, reading and writing. The main aims are to increase the children’s fluency in spoken and written language for a wide range of purposes, and to develop their understanding, critical appreciation and enjoyment of literature.
Mathematics
Mathematics at BIGGA Nursery & Primary School aims to develop children’s understanding and enjoyment of the subject by using practical activities, exploration and discussion alongside the teaching of the relevant knowledge and skills. These skills are taught in line with the recommended curriculum and are organised into seven strands of learning:
- Using and applying mathematics
- Counting and understanding number
- Knowing and using number facts
- Calculating
- Understanding shape
- Handling data
Where ever possible teachers strive to link these areas of mathematics to our term topics and to the children’s wider environment to give opportunities for them to apply their mathematical skills in everyday contexts.
Throughout, the school children are encouraged to develop their use of mathematical language so that they can therefore develop their communication skills, such as explaining and reasoning, through a variety of problem solving activities.
Basic Science
All children experience a broad, balanced, continuous science curriculum. This covers work on living things and their environment; materials and their uses; the Earth in space; forces; electricity and light; and sound. Science work is linked closely with other areas of the curriculum, particularly English, mathematics, ICT and design technology.
Computer Science
Computer Science plays a vital part in many aspects of our modern society. We aim to develop the confidence and ability of pupils in using computer so they gain the necessary skills to use technology to enhance their own learning.
The school has a dedicated computer suite of eight PCs. All pupils are taught on the skills needed to use specific hardware or software.
Creative and Cultural Arts
Art and Design is concerned with the creative and aesthetic response to the things that we can see and touch in our world. There are two strands to art education: creation and evaluation. The creative element involves children using a variety of material and equipment to represent objects realistically and imaginatively and to express their ideas and feelings. They are all encouraged to take a real pride in all their work. Children will become familiar with a wide range of media, including pencil, paints, chalk and pastels, fabrics, clay, and other materials.
We also teach the children to develop skills in evaluating their own work, and the work of other artists, and to begin to understand the value and significance of art in society.
Physical Health Education (PHE)
PHE has a high profile within the school. Within the PHE curriculum, the children in both Nursery and Basic Classes are taught gymnastics, dance, games and athletics.
The school has special sporting dresses for pupils which the parents are to purchase at the period of pupils’ admission into the school. Pupils are not allowed to take part in PHE activities in school uniform.
French Language
We feel that it is very important for the children to experience learning a second language. To this end, all the pupils in Nursery and Primary are taught French language. The lessons concentrate on both spoken and written skills including an introductory insight into French speaking countries customs and culture.
Music
There are two main aspects to music within school, the making of music and the appreciation of music. Our aim is to give the children a broad experience of musicmaking using their voices, a range of tuned and untuned percussion instruments and ‘music technology’.
Religious Education
Religious Education is provided in accordance with the recommended curriculum. Whilst this reflects the predominantly Christian culture in which we live, emphasis is placed upon the children gaining knowledge of other religions, their beliefs and practices. We encourage children to develop sensitive attitudes to the beliefs of others by studying what it means to belong to different faiths.
Other Learning-Linked Activities
The school offers a wide variety of planned activities including the following.
Educational Visits
Children have opportunity of experiencing a variety of educational visits from Nursery to Basic 6. Experiences include a wide range of trips linked to the curriculum and are organized for the purpose of supporting and extending learning. We encourage pupils to become involved in educational visits and as for many pupils these visits are a memorable highlight which enriches and complements their learning experience.
Drama
Drama gives children a valuable opportunity to explore ideas and feelings creatively and imaginatively and to develop the speaking and listening element of the Literacy Hour. Through drama activities the children discover much about themselves and learn to appreciate the feelings and experiences of others. Some activities may culminate in a performance before an audience during the school special programme and events
Collective Workshop
At BIGGA Nursery & Primary School we do not concentrate on academics only, we also seek to inculcate godliness as part of standard of life required for excellence. We come together for assembly every day. We have regular visits from Pastor of Deeper Life Bible Church, Peace District Agbede Olosugbo. Assemblies are organised around a programme of relevant weekly themes. They include quiet moments for children to reflect on the main message of the assembly.
Parents have the right to withdraw their children from religious education or assembly. Should you wish to exercise that right, it is necessary to convey that wish to the Head teacher, in writing.
